Christine Claringbold started painting in 1994, while living in Montana and awaiting the birth of her daughter
Tangereen Velveteen. Needing a way to express her powerful emotions, she grabbed the first blank canvas she could find, which happened to be a vintage hardshell suitcase with the Greyhound tags still attached - it had accompanied her on many travels. The front panel of the suitcase soon became a wild exploration of color and pattern.
In the years since, Christine has continued to embrace the concept of using recycled and reclaimed materials as her canvases. After springing her amazing suitcase on the world, she was soon commissioned to paint an electric guitar, a friend'??s table, the interior of a classic car, and the pop machine at the local record store. When Tangereen was one month old, the Claringbolds moved home to Portland, Oregon and Christine continued to paint everything she could get her hands on, including a box of old records donated by a friend of a friend. With records, Christine discovered her ability to create mandalas, and this has become the basis of her work.
Christine started painting murals in 1997, and the interior of her home, adorned with psychedelic mandalas on walls and ceilings, will be featured on two upcoming episodes of a new program called "Look What I Did" on HGTV. Christine will also appear on HGTV's "That's Clever!" this holiday season, demonstrating a Snowman Record Bowl.
In 2004, Christine launched her business, Eye Pop Art, marketing her original mandalas (painted on old vinyl records) at Portland Saturday Market and through Trillium Artisans, an organization for artists who use recycled materials.
